I went to draw money at an FNB ATM and while I was waiting for my cash, an advert popped up on the screen. It was for the guide dog association, and showed a cute labrador with a request for a R10 donation. So I thought why not – I’m taking out a few hundred anyway so lets give a bit of charity at the same time. I’m looking for the button to push to give a donation and then I see that there isn’t one - you have to send a premium-rated SMS to a number. Now please help me understand this. Here is a campaign set up by a bank (which is in the business of money transactions), at an ATM (whose job it is to move money out of bank accounts) and I have to send an SMS on my cellphone?! Why don’t they simply have a button that I push and the money automatically comes off my account and goes into the account of the guide dogs association? Well done FNB for supporting a charity, but why not do it properly?
