I work in a bank and we recently uncovered a really smart scam. A post office worker opened an account at our bank in the name of Stanley Ars.
He then intercepted all mail addressed to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) and opened them, taking out the cheques included with people’s tax returns. On the cheque, he would then put a big dot after the ‘S’ in ‘SARS’, so that it looked like the cheque was made out to S. Ars. This was then deposited into his account.
We eventually caught him, but he managed to deposit quite a bit before we discovered it.
Moral of the story – don’t send cheques in the mail.

I heard a similar story about someone opening a bank account in the name of Nicholas Umsa. He then did the same thing with the dot and cashed a whole lot of cheques that were meant for NUMSA - the National Union of Mineworkers South Africa.
Amazing how creative crooks can be!
